Pup-Approved Safety Guidelines
Pup-Approved Safety Guidelines
We know safety and enrichment is your top dog priority, so here's the scoop on keeping your pup's EverChew experience pawsitive and worry-free:
- Dishwasher Safe: SafetyChew+ can handle a spin in the dishwasher—no sweat!
- Not a Toy: SafetyChew+ is all about the chew, not the playtime. Be sure to remove the holder and pin when about an inch of the chew remains.
- Chew the Chew: If your doggo is more interested in the holder than the chew, a little training may be needed to keep the focus on the tasty part. This can be common for puppies.
- Pups Only: This product is for canine consumption only—no hoomans or hoomoms allowed!
- Inspect Regularly: While SafetyChew+ is tough, it's not indestructible. Keep an eye out for small pieces that might break off, but don't worry—the medical-grade polymer will pass safely through your pup's system if consumed.
- Stay Secure: Even if there are toothmarks, as long as the black pin latch is secure, the holder will keep the chew in place, so your pup can chew safely.
- Supervision Required: As with any treat or chew, always supervise.
- Hydration is Key: Always have fresh water available for your dog during chew sessions.
- Keep Out of Reach: SafetyChew+, pin, and chews should be kept out of reach of children and other curious critters.

Boiling may cause the green holders to warp slightly. Dishwasher on the top rack is fine. If you really want to boil it, drop it into boiling water for just 30 seconds so the outside gets hot, but the bulk of the plastic doesn't have time to heat through.
Yes, they're a product on our site.
You can drill your own, but there are a few pitfalls. (1) The stick needs to fit into the holder--that's easy for the SafetyChew+ and SuperChew, but the smaller SafetyChew original has a smaller cener hole for the dog chew. (2) The hole must be drilled exactly through the center of the bully stick, or else it may not fit right into either of the holders. (3) The diameter of the drilled hole must be large enough for the locking pin to fit--without weaking the side walls of the hole. We have specially engineered drilling stations to make the hole exactly perfect. And each stick will fit the holder it's selected for. So you will actually have less wasted sticks because the self-drilled hole is bad.
All three holders are top-rack safe. But washing means you will have to re-lubricate the pin so it doesn't catch the black latch. So lubricate it with anything greasy like a cooking oil or a food-safe silicone grease.
No. Our pin-lock design was designed from the ground-up so that anyone can load and unload a bully stick using just their pinkies (or even chopsticks). No twisting, cranking, or squeezing required. That makes it perfect for owners with arthritis or limited hand strength.
That's not advisable since in our testing the yak chews can break off at the hole, and then can be a choking hazard.
Many customers report 2-plus years with weekly use.
Yes, our nylon pin passed 170 lbs of pull-force testing in the lab. Your dog can't pull it free, but your fingers can release it in a second.
The medical-grade green polymer we use has a slight elastomeric flex to it, so it's quiet on hardwood or tile. The SuperChew nylon holder is louder but still much quieter than you might expect.
The green holders can get chewed up by super-chewers. But the black nylon holder is nearly indestructible, we have yet to have a nylon holder that has failed.
The holders to get some sharp points on them as the dog wears it down. This is more noticeable on the black nylon SuperChew holder since it is a harder plastic. The points never seem to bother the dogs and they may act like a dental pick, but the human may find sharp points, especially around the latch, are uncomfortable on your finger. What we do is use nail clippers and a little bit of sandpaper to clean them up.
One interesting thing we've learned about the SafetyChew holders is that while the pin locks the stub in and we call it undefeatable, if the dog licks and slobbers and nibbles on the trapped chew stub, it will slowly soften and tear off in little fragments. After about an hour or more of nibbling, usually over the course of several sessions, the dog may finally shred the chew enough that it will finally fall off the pen. But the good thing is that the partial piece that falls off is so small that it's not a choking or digestive-blocking hazard, and your dog has gotten a lot of joy working on getting that piece out.
The smaller green SafetyChew is our original holder, designed for small dogs and puppies under about 16 lbs. The SafetyChew+ (sometimes called SafetyChew Plus) is for medium dogs and holds Thick and Jumbo sticks. The black SuperChew is made from nearly-indestructible nylon for powerful, aggressive chewers of any size.
The SafetyChew pin is made from high-grade (virgin) Nylon here in the US. It's non-toxic and is the polymer used in all kinds of dog chews like a Nylabone.
We use a straight-through-the-hole pin, not surface friction, so there's zero chance the stick can get pulled free. And our latch mechanism is easy on the hands unlike every other holder that requires good hand strength. All the other twist or screw to tighten holders can especially fail once the stick gets slobbery slippery.
We mold it in the USA from medical-grade polymer (the green SafetyChew and SafetyChew+ holders) or from Nylon (the black SuperChew).
The green SafetyChew is best for small dogs and puppies (roughly under 16 lbs), the SafetyChew+ handles medium dogs and thicker sticks, and the black SuperChew is for powerful chewers and larger dogs. When in doubt, get the more durable holder.
Each holder has it's own starter pack of the holder and three pre-drilled bully sticks. Open the pouch, load the stick, and your dog can chew right away.
All polymers (nylon, rubbers, etc) used in the holders are made in the US. All the polymers are turned into components (pin, ring, etc.) in tthe US. All components are turned into the three holders in Texas or Washington State.
The green polymer has a slight flex that cushions bumps, so there will be no dents. The harder SuperChew nylon holder can dent a hardwood floor if dropped, but we have had no reports of floors getting dented or scratched.
Maybe, the stick must be small enough to fit into the hole (of the holder you have, there are 3 sizes), and the hole must be large enough for the pin to pass through. The hole must also be drilled in the center of the stick or the pin still may not fit.
