Why use a holder?
The last inch (or more) is the risky part.
Bully sticks (unlike dental chews) are very durable and won't just soften into goo if trapped in the esophogus or the intestine. Sometimes a vet is needed to get the foreign object out.
EverChew's holders secure the stick with a locking pin that secures the chew regardless of how slobber-slippery it gets.

The pre-drilled hole aligns with the holder. Push in the nylon pin and the chew becomes mechanically connected to the holder—even after the surface gets wet and slippery.

BUT, you can drill your own chews (see video). For the Regular sticks and the smallest SafetyChew holder, we recommend using a 9/32" drill bit. For Thick and Jumbo sticks in either the SafetyChew+ or SuperChew holder, using a 5/16" bit works best.

A small pin with serious holding strength
In pull tests (both formal and in demos), the locking connection hold the stick with more than 160 pounds of force. Your dog will not be able to pull the stick free--but the locking pin is so easy to use, you can load in a fresh stick using just your pinkies. At right you can see Kirby doing a pull up while holding onto a SafetyChew where the stick is clamped to a rope tied to roof joist.
